ARDAL WEBSITE – CARBON PAGE (MAY 25)

At Ardal, we are committed to building a more sustainable future—and we know we can’t do it alone. That’s why we’re working closely with our partners and suppliers to reduce carbon emissions and embrace circular economy principles across our supply chain.

Ardal Councils have all committed to be Carbon Neutral by 2030. Every year, each Council must report its organisational emissions to the Welsh Government, and currently the emissions arising from the goods, services and works each Council purchases can contribute towards as much as 80% of a Council’s carbon footprint.

Tackling our Supply Chain Emissions

Our supply chain emissions are also known as Scope 3 emissions. These indirect emissions arise from a Council’s demand for goods, services or works, and pose a particular challenge for local authorities, as these emissions occur in supply chain activities that the Council does not directly own or control. To understand these emissions better, we need suppliers to begin reporting their carbon footprints and decarbonising their operations, to help us identify carbon hotspots and track progress towards our decarbonisation targets.

To help suppliers get started, we’ve created a short video that explains our Carbon Journey and how you can join us.  Click here to open.

Embedding Circular Economy

Alongside carbon reporting, circular economy is a key priority for Ardal. A circular approach keeps materials in use for as long as possible, reducing waste and conserving resources. For suppliers, this means designing products for durability, repairability, and recyclability, as well as exploring take-back schemes or using recycled content. These practices not only reduce environmental impacts but can also unlock cost savings and innovation opportunities.

Buying Responsibly
Looking ahead, Ardal will be embedding carbon emissions reporting and circular economy principles into our tenders and contracts. This will involve purchasing in a way that supports the principles of designing out waste and pollution, keeping products/materials in use for as long as possible and helping us understand the carbon emissions associated with what we are buying. Incorporating this into our tenders and contracts will ensure that we are buying responsibly, and we want to work with suppliers who share these values and vision.
