Rhys chose the apprenticeship route to combine his love of maths with hands-on, on-site experience, and hasn’t looked back. From earning while learning to seeing real projects take shape, his story shows just how rewarding apprenticeships can be.
As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re shining a spotlight on apprentices making a real difference in the construction industry. One such apprentice is Rhys Jones, who’s currently training as a Quantity Surveyor at Centregreat.
Rhys chose an apprenticeship in civil engineering because of his love for mathematics and working on-site. “When I spoke to someone in the industry, they advised that civil engineering was the perfect place for me,” he explains.
He recommends the apprenticeship route over going straight to university. “You get a mix of on-site and office experience. Your company is likely to sponsor you, so you have zero university fees, and they pay you a wage as well,” he says.
For Rhys, the highlight of his role is seeing projects come to life on site. “You do get the office experience as well, but it’s much more rewarding seeing things on site,” he adds.
Rhys joined his apprenticeship through Network 75 at the University of South Wales, which helped him find an employer, arrange interviews, and apply to university.
Rhys’ experience shows how apprenticeships can offer a meaningful combination of learning, earning, and hands-on experience — providing a strong foundation for a rewarding career in construction.
